With almost the entire budget of the film being offered as satellite rights (that is the amount given by the TV channels), anyone who had seen a camera or at least a couple of movies venture out to become a filmmaker.
The result is that from an average number of 100 releases per year, 2013 saw films raining in a rather amazing way. Almost 85 Malayalam films got released until June this year.
Most of them were beautiful ordinary films, which did atrocious business at the theatres but were made eyeing the channel right buyers. More than 30 new directors made their debut until June this year. The numbers of projects, which are progressing and had to be stopped midway, are indeed shocking.
Now the TV channels have put their foot down and have come up with some conditions to buy films. With enough to pick from, they are insisting on quality projects. Now, the films with some of the popular stars like Mammootty, Mohanlal,
Dileep and Prithviraj have demand yet, but the rest of the films are being bought on merit.
The unprecedented move from the TV channels has resulted in a huge crisis in Mollywood, with several projects, made with the idea of recovering the investments mainly from the satellite rights not finding any takers.
